Clayton Pfeiffer Spirit Award Winners: January

Each month the CrossFit Xtra Mile coaches nominate an athlete from each gym as the monthly Clayton Pfeiffer Spirit Award Winner.  At the end of the year, members from each gym will vote for the yearly winner who best represents the character and qualities of Clayton Pfeiffer, a young Xtra Mile athlete lost to us much too young.  Clayton was a college baseball player and a gym junkie.  He was not the biggest athlete, but he would not be outworked, and he had a kind and fun personality.  At the CrossFit Xtra Mile gyms, coaches are constantly on the lookout for athletes that honor Clay’s memory.

CFXM Fenton Winner–Brittney Schaffer

Wise Advice

Our CrossFit Xtra Mile–Fenton’s January Spirit Award Winner’s advice for a new CrossFitter speaks volumes about why her coaches nominated her for this award.  She suggests that new members reverse cherry pick.  She explains, “If a workout gets posted full of things you aren’t good at or includes things that you hate, SHOW UP.  The only way to like those things and get better at them is to show up every time they’re programmed.”

Brittney Schaffer lives out this advice daily in the gym.  She shows up for running WODS even when they make her shins hurt or she can’t breathe and endlessly practices the elusive toes to bar.  Her refusal to give in to the struggle is inspiring.  Not to mention, she is friendly, outgoing, and super fun to have in class.

Soon-to-be Counselor

When Brittney is not at the gym, she will either be working as a Special Education teaching assistant, reading, watching movies, or going on walks with her dog, Zeppelin. She also has a Masters in School Counseling and hopes to have her first counseling job by next school year.

Part of the Family

In the gym, Brittney’s favorite move is the snatch because it is challenging, and she also really likes the Hero WOD DT.  Her favorite CrossFit memory is her first Throwdown.  She thought she was dying, but she also learned that the Xtra MIle community was actually a family.

She loves her CrossFit Xtra Mile family and looks forward to seeing her favorite people every day.  She feels that the community understands each other, suffers together, complains together, and grows together.

More Than Just a Gym

For Brittney, CrossFit Xtra Mile formed a support system when she found the gym after getting divorced.  She needed something positive in her life, and XM helped her stay sane and improve her life.  Since beginning CrossFit, Brittney has learned to stop comparing herself to others and learned that accepting herself is the only way to improve and the ONLY way to be happy.

Even though Brittney is only 29, she has learned many valuable lessons about life, herself and CrossFit.  Be sure to drop by a 6:30 pm class at the Fenton location and pick up some knowledge, or just enjoy being around a fun person.

Congratulations, Brittney!  We sure are glad you found CrossFit Xtra Mile and became a part of our FAMILY!

CFXM Central Winner–Chris Martin

Chris Martin, our CrossFit Xtra Mile–Central January Spirit Award Winner, has been a member of the CrossFit Xtra Mile family off and on for four and a half years.  He started at Xtra Mile Fenton, then had to switch gyms when he changed jobs.

Currently, he works as a Graphic Production Specialist.  When he isn’t working or at the gym, he hangs out with his wife and two daughters, watches movies and TV, and plays in an ice hockey league.

Looking for Something More

He found CrossFit Xtra mile when he got bored with his regular routine and was looking for something that would challenge him more.  He was hooked after taking one of Coach Corey’s classes.  Since he has started CrossFit, he has been able to do many movements and exercises that he couldn’t do when he started, including pretty much anything overhead.

When Chris is working out, his favorite movements are burpees and cleans, and he loves long, mostly bodyweight WODs.  His favorite gym memory is doing the Open for the first time.  He thought it was fun to compete and see how he did against people outside the gym.

Part of Something Great

Chris feels that the CrossFit Xtra Mile community is made up of a great, supportive group of people and the best coaches in town.

Chris’s coaches really enjoy having him in class as well.  He is always very eager to learn and get better, and he has a POSITIVE attitude no matter what is going on inside or outside the gym.

Seeking Continued Improvement

He is a hard worker, even when the movements are ones he doesn’t love.  In class, he is outgoing and very caring, helpful, and thoughtful.  Even as a veteran CrossFitter, he has not lost the desire to continually improve and celebrates any improvement as a victory.

You can usually find Chris hard at work in the evening classes at CrossFit Xtra Mile–Central.  If you get a chance, take a class with him and see what he is all about!

Congratulations, Chris! We’ve loved getting to know you at both gyms and are thrilled to have you represent the CrossFit Xtra Mile–Central through this award!
